Self-Study Resources As a source of teaching ideas, and perhaps of self-study courses that would be helpful to some learners, see the self-instructional courses from FEMA. There is a path by which individuals may earn college credit for these independent study courses. Another source, also from FEMA, is training related to the National Incident Management System (NIMS).
The Yale New Haven Center for Emergency Preparedness Offers free on-line courses and many other useful educational materials.
The Center for Health Policy ad Columbia University School of Nursing A research and policy development center, and the place where the 11 competencies, see "What health professionals should know", were developed in 2003. The Center’s current projects include development of curricula and guidelines for training national, state, and local public health workers in emergency preparedness and response.
A project completed by the Center in 2004, called The Competency to Curriculum Toolkit: Developing Curricula for Public Health Workers is a useful guide to starting from scratch to create curricula in this field.
Available Educational Materials There is a database of instructional materials developed by various grantees of BTCDP, (the same HRSA program responsible for the contract with CAAHEP). Check it out.
American Medical Association Materials for doctors and other health professionals are available from the AMA's Center for Public Health Preparedness and Disaster Response.
